According to the handbook, there are 4 Honor Academy pillars. They are:
Vision
Discpline
Wisdom
Leadership
I would certainly agree that these are emphasized throughout the year. However, when its all said and done, you are left with something very different. I submit to you that the actual pillars of the Honor Academy are:
Fear
Guilt
Shame
Arrogance
How can I say this? Throughout the year, you are hammered by both Ron and Dave into changing your behavior through these four tactics. Looking through my notes from Ron Luce’s character development class, I see a perfect example of this. During his lecture on how to have a godly romance, he is telling us the exact way we should go about our relationship. The process he outlines is friendship first, then courtship, then engagement. Of course he has many guidelines for each of these stages. There is nothing wrong with advice and personal opinion, until he says this:
Its not just the person, itโs the process. You might have the right person, but if you mess up process โ bam, horrible marriage, or horrible first 5 years of marriage.
So, Ron is saying that unless we follow his prescription we will suffer horrible consequences. How does this relate to the Honor Academy pillars?
Fear – If you don’t do it Ron’s way, you will fail.
Guilt – If you are having difficulty in your marriage, it must be because of your sin.
Shame – Only people who don’t do it right have problems.
Arrogance – I know exactly how to prevent problems for every person and every circumstance.
I’m positive I could come up with hundreds of more examples from my notes. Alumni – please feel free to share your experiences in the comments.
