Weekend Reading

Here are a few blog posts that stood out to me over the last month. I hope you like them as much as I do!

1) The Allure of Toxic Leaders

We are apparently attracted to toxic leaders. Psychological dynamics that lead us to rally around such leaders include a subconscious longing for a parental figure later in adult life, the need for security and certainty in an unpredictable world, and a desire to feel chosen or special, as we join together in community with others to support the noble vision of a bigger-than-life leader. We tend to look the other way, where integrity is concerned, if we can find an inspiring, confident leader to satisfy these pressing psychological needs.

2) Choices Not Your Own(2021 Update: While the original link technically works, it seems that there’s something funky and it quickly redirects to a questionable site. Instead, the Wayback Machine is linked.)

If someone kicks you out of an airplane at 10,000 feet, and you’re lucky enough to be wearing a parachute, you have two options: pull the rip cord or become a greasy spot on the ground. Now, make no mistake, the decision to pull the cord and open the chute is all yours, free and clear…Do you see where this is going? The guy who kicked you out of the plane made your choice for you when he kicked you out of the plane and left you with only one viable option, BUT, he can distance himself from you choosing to open the chute because, technically, he wasn’t there when you made this “choice”.

3) Jesus Contends with Religion

So let me ask you this. If you stopped going to church for years, and never picked up your Bible again, would you still believe your eternal security rested in the good and gracious heart of Christ, despite your lack of ritual? If not, then part of your security is based in religion, and it’s a false security.

These are all worth a read if you haven’t already I read all three and there were a lot of things that hit home even if it wasn’t all perfectly tuned to my situation. Thank you for these!
